In this opening episode, I, Marc Pietersen introduces Education Unlocked — a podcast designed to help teachers learn practical strategies, apply them with intention, and thrive in the classroom. I shares the vision behind the show, my background as a Primary Classroom Teacher and M.Ed educator, and how this space will blend powerful research with real-world classroom action.
This first series will unpack my own Master’s dissertation and action research project on improving reading fluency and comprehension in low-ability EAL learners. Across the episodes, I will break down the journey step-by-step — from identifying the problem to designing the intervention, testing tech-supported strategies, analysing data, and combining confidence-building with literacy development.
If you’re an educator who wants to move beyond theory and unlock practical, evidence-based strategies you can use the very next day — this is where your journey begins.

Learn. Apply. Thrive.
Welcome to Education Unlocked. Learn, apply, thrive. Teaching shouldn't feel like guessing. It shouldn't feel like you're trying 20 different strategies and hoping that one sticks. What if you could take real research, real classroom evidence, and turn that into strategies that actually can be applied tomorrow? That's exactly what Education Unlocked is about. Welcome to the very first episode. I'm Mark Peterson, a primary teacher, hopefully school leader one day, and an MED graduate. I created the space for teachers who want more than theory, teachers who want clarity, confidence, and real classroom impact. That's what Learn, Apply, and Thrive is all about. And that's what I'm hoping will be carried out here. If you learn it, you can apply it in the next lesson you teach. So, what will this podcast do? Each episode will take powerful research, ideas from cognitive science, literacy development, language acquisition, motivational theory, and break it down into simple, usable classroom tested steps. Not just what sounds good or looks good academically, but what actually works in schools with real kids in the real world. To start this podcast, I'm going to do something personal and meaningful to me, and hopefully it'll be valuable to you. Our first series will be based on my master's dissertation, my action research project on improving reading fluency and comprehension in low ability EAL context. Over several episodes, I'll walk you through that journey. What the problem was, how I designed the interventions, what tech support scaffolds I used, what improved, what didn't improve, what actual data revealed, and how any teacher can apply these strategies without needing expensive programs or paid apps. This isn't research for research sake. This research is to unlock practical change in your classroom. What I'm hoping you will take away from this series is how to build fluency in the way that sticks, how to create literacy support that students actually use, how to use AI as scaffolding, not cheating, how to track progress meaningfully, and how to build confidence alongside those skills. Because fluency impacts everything writing, spelling, confidence, independence, it's foundational. And when fluency improves, everything else begins to unlock. So, welcome to Education Unlocked. In the next episode, we begin that journey. What exactly was the problem I was trying to solve? Why weren't traditional reading approaches enough? And why did some students stay stuck for years? This next episode will set that context. From there, we'll continue to build. If you're a teacher who wants to feel more confident, more equipped, and more inspired, you're in the right place. Thank you for listening to the first episode. Let's unlock education together. Learn, apply, thrive.
